Bangladesh Integrated Household Survey (BIHS):

DATA in collaboration with International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) delivered BIHS. BIHS was a 3 tier multifaceted household survey. The panel surveys consisted of a baseline (2011-2012), midline (2015) and an end-line (2017-2018). The BIHS data since its publication has been downloaded over 2 million times. It covers 5 survey questionnaire merged into one:

  • All member anthropometry measurement
  • Plot-level agricultural land
  • Infant and Young Children
  • Women Empowerment Index in Agriculture
  • Dietary Intake for all members

The number of households in the survey are upwards of 7000. All these households recruited in the baseline survey were visited for the next two round of surveys making it one of the largest nationally represented panel surveys facilitated by private consultancy firm.  This survey recorded the expenditure, consumption, child growth, asset distribution, etc journey over the 8 year duration for each of these participating households.

The entire survey was conducted using DATA’s resources tablets, weighing machines, height scales etc. The first two rounds of the survey were done using PAPI method of interviewing, but for the end line survey DATA upgraded its resources to a CAPI based system.

BIHS is among DATA’s proudest achievements, and one of many policy level research projects in their portfolio. The impact of BIHS is not only demonstrated in the research produced but also in its hand in inspiring many large scale studies in Bangladesh by multiple organizations.
